How many times have you heard someone say that they don’t want to go natural because they don’t want to go through “the ugly phase”?
For most people with natural hair, the “ugly” phase is the timeframe during which the hair is in an “awkward” length and is hard to style/ manipulate. In addition, this phase could be the time that the person is getting used to seeing their hair in a new/different state. Some people feel less beautiful or confident because their curls aren’t popping yet, they’re dealing with heat damage, or battling a hair growth condition.
I always cringe at the fact that the common name for this period of natural growth is “The Ugly Phase”. What if we shift our thinking or language to, simply, see it as a growing phase? The hair is growing. The journey is growing on you and others.
This is the time to show the hair love: nourish it with our Vibrato Hair/Scalp Oil Serum, find healthy hair products without parabens or sulfates, and keep your ends trimmed.
This is the time for patience and persistence. Not every moment in this beautiful phase will be easy. Frustration will rise. Nervousness and anxious feelings about hair styles and “perfect” coils may come, but try not to sit in it. Try not to compare your journey to others. Embrace your unique coil, color, strand, length, thinness, thickness …. The list goes on!
For the last 10-15 years, natural hair (hair strands without chemicals) has made a “return” and has become more appreciated and embraced. So, the next time you hear someone say their natural hair is in “The Ugly Phase”, remind them that their natural hair growth, at any length, is beautiful, powerful, and needed.
